The Ethiopian Somali Regional State Liyou Police has distinguished themselves as patriotic force for peace and stability in the region and beyond.
To say a little about what inspired me in writing this opinion piece is the fact that I was thinking about a popular quote from Albert Einstein that that insanity is by definition “doing the same thing all over and each time expecting a different outcome” while I was contemplating about the leadership of President Abdi Mohamud Omer’s and how he differs from his predecessors. It means the previous administrations were doing the same thing again and again and we were all expecting different outcome.
Those who led the initiative for the establishment of the Liyou Ploice, especially President Abdi Mohamud Omer deserves genuine appreciation. Those efforts resulted a period of security, stability and developmental in the Ethiopian Somali Regional State.
However enthusiastic I was, when I sat down to write this Article about the current security stability and development status of the region, I cannot fully deliver all the various significant changes, events, facts and evidences about the current security, stability and developmental transformation of the region in such a limited space. I believe there are many other people, here in Ethiopian Somali Region and elsewhere who are best qualified to do so.
Over the past ten years I had a unique opportunity to travel across the region in my capacity as Public Finance Management support team leader. During this time, I witnessed and learnt much about the region in terms of security as well as other socioeconomic developmental aspects.
This is the result of a prolonged fight by the Somali people for realizing their constitutionally guaranteed rights in terms of security and socioeconomic development. The sacrifices paid by the individual members of the Liyou Police Force are just the manifestation of this. Some had paid the ultimate price of death not only blood and sweat to protect innocent civilians.
Fairly speaking no one would deny that the region has changed dramatically in the last a five years. One has to not look further than the current security, stability and other developmental transformations in infrastructure, rapidly expanding basic services and good governance in Ethiopian Somali Regional State.
They became a model for fight against terrorism and extremism in other regions in Ethiopia but also in other troubled regions of the Horn of Africa. For example, the president the Puntland and Jubbaland regions of Somalia stressed that they need to draw important lessons from ESRS Liyou Police Force in their own fight against terrorist groups in their backyard.
Finally, all of us need to put a concerted effort to educate those meddle in untruthful assertions about the Region in general and the Liyou Police in particular both here and abroad. We need to shed light on about the irrefutable peace, stability and the socioeconomic progress in the Somali Region of Ethiopia. We also need to be vigilant about those who have a calculated political agenda rooted in rent-seeking, massive propaganda and other or unconstitutional activities and stop on their distractive tracks.
